High Quality Kitchen Butcher Blocks from John Boos & Co.

Founded in 1887 at Conrad Boos’s blacksmith shop in Effingham, Illinois, the John Boos company has proven to be one of the oldest domestic manufacturers of foodservice equipment and butcher blocks. Conrad began this tradition using sycamore wood from local stands that he then processed in his mill and finished in his blacksmith shop as a sturdy base to handle the impact of his anvil. A local butcher saw another use for Conrad’s handicraft, and the Boos Block was born. Conrad’s son, John, crafted that first block and so the company began.

John Boos & Co. changed hands and persevered through some of the most difficult days in the 20th century, creating and innovating all the way. Product lines were expanded to incorporate stainless steel and designs were adapted for the home cook. Despite technological improvements, John Boos & Co. craftspeople largely use the same proprietary process that was developed over 100 years ago.
